Educational toys are very popular with parents, who love to combine fun with learning any chance they get for their children! In modern society, a high value is placed upon knowledge, and educational toys are believed to teach children in ways that conventional toys can't.

Nonetheless, it is debatable whether many of the toys on the market labeled as educational do, actually, offer something a conventional version cannot. For instance, model warplane kits have long been among the most popular of pastimes, and many a hobbyist has gone on to learn much about the history and mechanics associated with particular aircraft.

Lego building blocks have also been popular for decades as educational toys, as they are believed to foster planning and reasoning skills while exercising a child's developing sense of spatial dimensions. And kids in any age or time are able to make toys out of practically anything, engaging in play with them that unwittingly reflect real-world situations. But the modern-day category of educational toys are supposed to be created with specific lessons in mind, such that several packages will even list the specific skills that should be acquired by a child through interaction with the product!

Possibly the most truly modern educational toy of all is the programmable robot kit. Unless other items that purport to be educational, it's immediately obvious how a programmable robot kit does really teach something.

Moreover, the skills learned are extremely valuable ones in our computerized world, very easily applicable to obtaining high-paying jobs (perhaps the favorite parental buzzword!) later on in life - and not all that much later, too, as it's not uncommon for "whiz kids" familiar with electronics or computer programming often earn solidly middle-class income in college or even high school. However, programmable robots appeal mostly to boys, and even then not all boys since these kits typically take a lot of patience to learn before they could be "played with.
