Guiding Your Children Plan Their Summer
Finally, school is out for the summer! Your kids are excited and happy, but you may be wondering how you are going to entertain them all summer. This can be a bit overwhelming to many parents.
If your kids are like mine, they are glad to have a break in being in class all day and feel empowered to do whatever they want all summer. On the other hand, you may feel pressured to keep them busy all summer.
It is great for you to plan activities that will allow children to learn while having fun. Just remember to work in some time for them to have free play time too.
So what should independent play time look like? This may depend on the age of your children, as well as how independent they already are. The younger the child, the more closely you'll want to want to supervise them during their 'independent' play time. Your older kids, on the other hand, will enjoy having some alone time. They can entertain themselves alone in their room or in the yard, and you'll still be just a holler away.
Be sure to let your kids help decide how days will be spent. A good thing to do is to have a couple of options ready and let them choose one for the day.
Your kids are more likely to actively participate in the day's activities if they played a role in selecting the activity.
On some days, you and your kids will both enjoy choosing from a few different options. On other days, you may not be able to do this. There are likely to be days in which you don't have enough flexibility to let the children make the decision. This is not a problem. Just be very clear with your kids as to whether or not there are choices for the day.
By alternating between planned activities, free play time, and independent time, you'll not only give your kids a great summer, but you'll give yourself a few breaks here and there as well!
