Foster parenting can be very challenging, yet it can be a very rewarding job. It's a great thing to give a child a chance at a normal life. A foster parent must understand that you are taking a child under your wing, without really knowing what they have been through. It takes a special people to provide a safe harbor for such a child. Here are three important tips for foster parents.

Foster children will take issue with your authority. Expect this and you will be prepared for when it happens. Many foster children will have a problem with your authority because they have probably never had an authority figure in their life.
Know and understand where your foster child is in terms of their development. Since you have not raised them from birth, you have no way of knowing what dependency needs have been met by the former parents. This is why learning as much about child development is a must for foster parents.
Foster parenting involves spending time with your foster child. I'm not just talking about quality time but what I mean is quantity time. Quantity time with your foster child creates a connection through the experience of doing regular tasks together, such as chores, taking the dog for a walk or grocery shopping. By spending this type of time with your foster child it may open up the communication between you too.

Foster parenting can be a rewarding experience for parent and child. Nothing is better than giving a foster child a place they can call home until they find placement in their final home.
